In 2007, the Northwest Multiple Listing Service, the largest full-service MLS in the Northwest, enhanced its listing forms and database so properties with certain environmental certifications, energy efficient features and sustainable materials could be readily identified.

Among the fields are designations for homes that meet third-party certifications for Built Green, Energy Star and LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards. Additionally, NWMLS created checkboxes for identifying various energy-efficient heating and cooling systems (with “solar” being a new field), and for renewable floor coverings such as bamboo, cork or other sustainable materials.

LEED for Homes

LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a nationally recognized, third-party certification system that’s based on measurable results. As such, LEED recognizes the highest quality in green homebuilding. LEED-certified homes are energy efficient, use non-toxic building materials, are water-smart, and respect the environment in which they’re constructed.

ENERGY STAR

Builders who choose to build ENERGY STAR® homes use the “house as a system” approach.

The interaction of all systems in the home is considered during planning and construction,

including heating and cooling, windows, doors, insulation, appliances and lighting, resulting

in a high quality home that will save energy and money.

Built Green

Built Green homes are designed to provide homeowners with comfortable,

operate. The 4 & 5 Star certification levels require third-part verification and

provide the greatest sustainable benefits.
